Microbiological validation

Precisely defined microorganisms are used as reference to define the absolute retention rates.

For instance, Brevundimonas diminuta is a rod-shaped bacterium, 0.4 – 0.5 µm wide and 1 - 2 µm long. If this bacterium is unable to pass the filter membrane under precisely defined conditions, this membrane by definition has an absolute retention rate of 0.2 µm.

The following microorganisms are used for the definition of other retention rates: Acheloplasma leidlawii for 0.1 µm, Serratia marcescens for 0.45 µm, Lactobacillus species for 0.8 µm and Candida albicans for 1.2 µm.
